SCISSORHANDS
October, 2021
Cardboard, Resin, EVA Foam, Plastic Tubing, Aluminum Tape, Rubber Gasket
DESCRIPTION
I built these for my 2021 Halloween costume. The scissor "blades" are cut from cardboard and folded to fit the glove, and glued with hot glue. All the fingers were then given a coat of epoxy resin. The aged metallic finish was achieved by covering each blade with aluminum tape, which was then spray painted and buffed with steel wool to create a weathered look. The back of the hands and scissor grips were made from EVA Foam, in order to keep them light enough to wear comfortably. The base is a pair of black costume gloves, and the wrist pieces are sections cut from rubber gasket, and then laced with leather shoelaces. On the original prop there are external armatures that connect some of the fingers to the wrist, so I replicated these with light weight plastic tubing, rope, and hot glue. It was important to me that I be able to take the gloves on and off without assistance, so the armatures are attached to the wrist with neodymium magnets. If the wearer requires use of their hands, they can easily be disconnected so the gloves can be slipped off.
