ROBOT BIRDS
January, 2023
Lasercut MDF, Cast Resin, 3D Printed Pieces, Miscellaneous Hardware
DESCRIPTION
These Robot Birds were created for UNCSA's 2023 production of Orlando Paladino. The show required two versions of the bird, one alive and one dead. The body of the "live" bird was constructed out of cast resin, lasercut MDF, and wood. The head was 3D printed and fitted with 2 LED eyes. The flapping mechanism is extremely simple: each wing is attached to two flexible spring doorstops which bounce as the actor moves the puppet up and down. The "dead" version was created primarily out of EVA foam and cast urethane foam, to allow it to be safely thrown on stage. The head, feet, and chest details, were all 3D modeled by Skyler James, and printed by Miles Maline. The dagger that runs through the chest of the dead bird was created by Mackenzie Potter.
